Biographical sketch [microform] (Typescript).

Born in Sumner County, Tennessee, son of Edmund Browning and Sarah Allen. Early life; conversion to Mormonism in Adams County, Illinois, 1840; labor there as the justice of the peace; removal with his family to Nauvoo, Illinois, 1842; service of his brother, Orvill H. Browning as defense attorney for Joseph Smith; exodus west; manufacture of guns and service on the high council in Council Bluffs, Iowa; journey across the plains, 1852; settlement in Ogden, Utah; service as a bishop's counselor, and on a high council; activities as a memberof the city council, justice of the peace and member of the territorial legislature.

From Quincy, Illinois served as state senator, 1836-1841 and state representative, 1842-1843, delegate to the anti-Nebraska convention in Bloomington, Ill. in 1856 and to the Republican National Convention in 1860, appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill Stephen A.
